We finally finish students' thesis defence of the year 2007

Today is the day of students' thesis defence in our department in the year 2007. Our department will have 221 graduates this year. As for the new regulation of our uni, all of them should attend thesis defence in order to get the other fifty points in their total 100 points thesis writing. This is different from that of last year, in which only authors of excellent theses attended the defence.

Today we divided the students into eight groups, with two teachers in each group. Our group has 31 students, and it took us a whole day to finish the defence. The proces of the defence is like thesis confirmation in Australia, which is as follows: Firstly. each student will be given five to ten minutes to present his thesis, then his supervisor will ask him two or three questions concerning his thesis. After that, the student will be given twenty minutes to prepare the questions. Finally, the student will answer the questions or defence his opinions with teachers.

I am the supervisor for 15 students this time. In other words, I have to read 15 copies of theses for students going to get a bachelor's degree. Those 15 theses cover topics of literature, linguistics, culture and grammar, with each about 6,000 words. So, I was busying reading those 15 theses these days, what was even worse was that for some research fields, including grammar and linguistics, I only have little knowledge. However this is also a good learning process for me.

The attractive things in Beijng

These days Beijing was very windy, however, the greatest advantage of the windy day was that blue sky appeared in Beijing again. I was even shocked when I first saw such a pure blue sky in Beijing cause in my memory the sky in Beijing has been gray for at least ten years. I stilled remembered my depressed feeling after I first came back to China from Australia in this early spring. But now, that was just past memories, I can enjoy the pure blue sky and white clouds in Beijing, in China again.

The host of the conference invited some artists to give two performances to the presenters. The night before yesterday was an acrobatic show form Wuqiao, yesterday was a dance and song show. They are all marvelous and fabulous. This is the second time for me to enjoy an acrobatic show, the first should be more than thirty years ago in the auditorium of Henan University when I was still a child. As for the dance and song show, many famous Chinese artists were invited to attend the performance. I preferred the Cross Talk performed by Jiang Kun and Dai Zhicheng, in which they told jokes of Chinese’ learning English with the tone of using different dialects.

I’ll post some pictures of the conference, blue sky of Beijing and the shows.

The Fifth International Conference on ELT in China

I came to Beijing to attend the Fifth International Conference on ELT in China this Wednesday, my presentation is due tomorrow. After I arrived in Beijing, I was busying attending conference and enjoying others’ presentations. The conference did not have many presentations in CALL, however, I still saw some technological novelties, including two different smart mobile phones which can teach students English by giving different English courses. A presenter from Japan introduced his research on the smart phone invented by a Japanese company, while an American showed his made by an American company. When I attended the conference last September in Australia at QUT, several presenters introduced mobile phone learning, but they did not show the audience their products.

Another presentation attracted me was the research done by several Singapore teachers. They introduced blog to primary school students’ English learning and made great achievements. They had their students created their blogs in blogspot, the same website as what I am using in doing my teaching innovation in China. The Singapore teachers introduced some advantages by using blogspot which made me feel at ease that my choice of this website was correct. Cause it is not always accessible in China, so I once thought of changing the website of my teaching blog.

Other presenters introduced their researches in moblogging (using mobile phone to write blogs) and podcasting(using ipod to teach language), for me they are no longer anything new, but for most of the audience, they felt surprised. Some world famous scholars, including Rod Ellis attended this conference and gave speeches. Several Australian scholars attended this conference, and one of them even came from QUT, but unfortunately I did not know him.

I saw my teaching blog once again

On the first day after the long holiday, I asked my students their blog addresses, and some of them in Class one and Class two gave them to me. As I was unable to access the Internet during weekdays, so last Friday night, I was eager to access the Internet to make links to my students blogs. But unfortunately, I was unable to access the "blogger. com". Considering that there might have some web troubles, I tried several times the next day and the day after that, but with the same result. Till this time, I began to realize the seriousness of this issue. Does this mean that the website of the blogger is blocked by the government again as it was done time and time again before? If it is the case, I have to consider the issue of shifting my teaching blog from this website to a Chinese one, which does not have the English surrounding as this one.

These days I have formed a habit of trying to access the website of my teaching blog, however I was disappointed each time when I was unable to access. This night when I tried as usual, my teaching blog appeared slowly. I was excited just as I saw an old friend. The first thing I did was to view my students' blogs.

Life in the May 1 long holiday

Today is the fourth day of the May 1 long holiday. After three days' busy reading students' theses and buying building materials to decorate the apartment of my parents, I finally had some time to breathe the free air today. What would I do, creating a blog to share ideas and thoughts with my friends and students. Compared with the blog creating I first did a year ago, it was easier to create a new blog with more features now.

Last week, I told my students the blog address of Debra, my supervisor, and asked them to visit her blog first, and then to create their own. I am sure that after the long holiday, some of them will tell me their blog address for me to make the link in my blog. I hope that my blog would be a bridge to let more people know life at Henan Univerisity of Finance and Economics(HNUFE), especially know what the staff and students of English Department do !
